U.S. Joins International Operation to Defend Red Sea Commercial Ships

39 nations commit to dissuade frequent attacks by Houthi rebels.

Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin announced on December 18 that the United States would be joining 38 nations to defend commercial vessels navigating the Red Sea. Yemeni rebels affiliated with the Houthi movement, a radical Islamic military group, have launched over 100 missile and drone attacks against commercial vessels in the area in the last month. Ten merchant shipping vessels have been targeted thus far, and nearly 20,000 commercial vessels transit the Red Sea every year.

“Operation Prosperity Guardian is bringing together multiple countries to include the United Kingdom, Bahrain, Canada, France, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Seychelles, and Spain to jointly address security challenges in the southern Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, with the goal of ensuring freedom of navigation for all countries and bolstering regional security and prosperity,” Secretary Austin said.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Secretary Austin to be guided by the Lord in his decisions and discussions.
  • For leaders in the Pentagon as they advise the president and foreign defense policy.
